Underground Railroad

Introduction:
Students learn history of slavery in America and the foundations of the Underground Railroad, a secret network that led them to freedom, usually in Canada. Once they understand the background, they’re given a thorough explanation of the simulation’s rules to ensure a safe and meaningful experience.

Groups of slaves always receive a warm welcome in the safe house A four-bounty-hunter evening

The Simulation
Each team of students plays a group of runaway slaves, with the chaperone serving as their conductor. While visiting stations at the 1812 Homestead, they encounter the Center’s staff, playing abolitionists, townspeople, bounty hunters, and the forces of the law. Much of the action tends to happen at the inn, which serves as the safe house and where students receive a snack and sit by the warm fire.

Conclusion
When the school bell rings, the activity concludes and all head to the erstwhile jail for a debrief. During this time, the empathetic approach to history is explained, and all present share what they know about present-day slavery.
