Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center encourages teachers to expand the students’ experience at the center by making the trip a part of their classroom curriculum or taking advantage of the Teacher Activity Time available after dinner each day. The list below contains ideas and examples provided by some of the center’s clients.
Journaling Students in grades 5-12 can benefit greatly from time spent journaling each night after dinner. Pok-O’s curriculum encourages students to step out of their comfort zone and try new things, which can be more powerful when time is allotted for quiet internal reflection. Students can journal freely or respond to a relevant prompt presented by teachers. This type of activity also helps ESL students practice newly acquired language skills. Thank You Letters Several teachers, especially those who use the center as an English immersion experience, have their students write letters to thank the instructors for a great time. This normally takes place in the classroom after the students return from their trip to the center. The activity is a great writing assignment that the students become excited about easily. Key Words Teachers planning to bring English as an Alternate Language (EAL) students to the center can ensure students are prepared for their trip by using our Key Words list. Words are organized by activities. Click here for the Acrobat PDF file.
