From the Trailhead Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center is now a not-for-profit! Wooo-hooo! Obtaining 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status has been one of my top priorities for the Center since I became director over a year ago. Now, with the start of our fall season, PMOEC is faced with numerous opportunities. For over thirty years, PMOEC has hosted schools and groups in fall, winter, and spring. We exist so children have the chance to discover their natural environment and build social skills by communicating with their peers. According to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation study, “American children between the ages of 8 to 18 spend an average of 6.5 hours a day indoors using computers, video games, television, and MP3 players.” 6.5 hours a day! Startling, isn’t it? Studies such as that one and Richard Louv’s book Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder prove how much more important our work here at Pok-O is becoming.
