As visiting students learn in Pond Ecology, if a body of water is deep enough to not allow light to touch the bottom throughout the majority of its area, then it’s a lake. As more than 50% of the bottom of Long Pond is covered with vegetation, it is therefore a pond. Carved by the same glaciers that cut nearby Lake Champlain, Long Pond is surrounded by mountain views, our Pok-O-Patch summits on one side, the High Peaks on the other. Its several coves play host to students in canoes, rowboats, and kayaks, and when frozen, cross-country ski tracks mark most of its surface.
