Employment

Rock Climb Belay

The Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center employs a small staff composed of instructors, interns, a maintenance coordinator, and a chef. We do not employ receptionists, waitpersons, etc. We do not hire staff solely for the summer season, although some full-time instructors may work through the summer.

Pok-O-MacCready seeks dynamic instructors to maintain our Center’s high level of excellence and professionalism in teaching and guiding children in all aspects of our outdoor education program. All instructors receive onsite training in our entire curriculum and are therefore expected to teach in all areas of our program. Work projects, including cleaning and manual labor, for property upkeep, curriculum design, and staff enrichment are an important part of the instructor position.

Breakdown of an Instructor’s Responsibilities:
50% - Teach various classes
20% - Lead day and overnight wilderness trips which may include hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, etc.
20% - Participate in work projects, including cleaning and manual labor (e.g. chopping fire wood, painting dorms)
10% - Assist in the kitchen, including preparing food and washing dishes

Qualifications: All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and able to work legally in the United States. Candidates must be personable, energetic, be able to have fun while they work, be team players, hard workers, and have a strong desire to share their love of the outdoors. Experience teaching young people is a must for all but internship applicants.

WFR certification or certification in Red Cross Responding to Emergencies, Solo Wilderness First Aid, or a comparable course valid through the last day of employment is highly desired. Reimbursement for medical training to be completed prior to staff training may be available.

We are looking for instructors with Bachelors Degrees in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Education, Outdoor Recreation or related fields. However, those with college degrees in other fields and high marks should not hesitate to apply. Hiking, backpacking, canoeing, climbing, and wilderness trip leader skills are also preferred.

Applicants must be physically fit, able to lead strenuous hikes and work long days in challenging weather conditions. All applicants must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Job offers are contingent on the results of a nation-wide criminal background check.

Benefits: All of our jobs include room and board, laundry facilities and internet access.  Pok-O-MacCready provides a fun environment in which to work, play, and socialize.  Two weeks paid training. All staff members participate in staff enrichment days. Staff members may use equipment (e.g. rock climbing equipment, canoes, mountain bikes, etc.) and facilities during their days off.

Full-time instructors: Eligibility for professional purchase programs through Liberty Mountain Sports, Black Diamond, The North Face, and with other leading outdoor equipment companies. Five days paid vacation. A total of five weeks paid training. Pok-O-MacCready can pay for one third of Full-time instructors’ health care coverage on our corporate plan.
