Camp MacCready

In 1967, friends of the long-established Camp Pok-O-Moonshine for boys established a sister camp on adjacent property, and named it Camp MacCready. Looking to the future, its buildings were all built for four-season use, and when the Outdoor Education Center was founded in 1974, it centered its facilities around the winterized cabins and main lodge.

At the heart of the Center is the “Pok-o-Queen,” which houses the dining hall, a student recreation area with fireplace, and the faculty and staff lounges.

The family-style dining hall of the Pok-O-Queen has hosted as many as 130 diners, all enjoying a variety of summer-camp favorites, from Shepherd’s Pie to a Thanksgiving-like feast.

The expansive sports fields can host lacrosse, soccer, football, kickball, and softball. Nestled just beyond them is “Aunt Sarah” dormitory.

Just above the sports fields is the mountain-biking shed, with ample bicycles for all sizes, always in good repair. 2006 saw the arrival of six new bikes. Also stored here is a mobile bike obstacle course for advanced cyclists.

During free time, visiting students love to play on the “North Country Pok-O-Plex,” with space and equipment for tennis, basketball, and hockey.

The original farmhouse for the property lives on as staff housing, with a large dormitory addition offering student and chaperone quarters. The dorm portion recently underwent massive renovations. In its courtyard lies the rock circle, gathering place for all activities, and setting for traditional pre-bedtime campfire.

MacCready Lodge and the Junior House dormitory offer additional sleeping quarters for visiting students, and like all forms, include full bathroom/shower facilities.
